Understanding Sound Therapy: Common Questions

What is a Sound Therapist?

A sound therapist is a trained practitioner who uses therapeutic sound to promote relaxation, healing, and balance within the body and mind. By creating specific sound frequencies with instruments such as Himalayan singing bowls, gongs, and therapeutic percussion. Sound therapy can help release physical, emotional, and mental tension, guiding you to a state of deep calm and inner peace.

What is a Soundbath and What to Expect

A soundbath is an immersive experience where you lie down comfortably, allowing the soothing vibrations of sound to ‘bathe’ you. During the session, I play a variety of instruments, including Himalayan Bowls, crystal bowls, an 80cm sun gong, and chimes, to create sound waves that resonate through your body. These sound waves promote deep relaxation, reduce stress, and encourage healing. You don’t need any prior experience to attend—just come with an open mind and a willingness to relax. Expect to leave feeling lighter, clearer, and more balanced.

  • Promotes deep relaxation
  • Improves sleep quality
  • Enhances mental clarity and focus
  • Supports emotional release and healing
  • Alleviates physical tension and discomfort
  • Encourages a sense of inner peace and balance
  • Lowers heart rate and blood pressure
  • Boosts overall wellbeing and calmness

Not Suitable For….

While soundbaths are safe and effective for most people, they may not be suitable for everyone. Sound therapy is not recommended for individuals with certain medical conditions, such as:

  • Individuals with severe heart conditions or pacemakers
  • Those with epilepsy or prone to seizures
  • People in the first trimester of pregnancy
  • Individuals with sound sensitivity or auditory processing issues

The Science Behind Soundbaths

Soundbaths offer more than just relaxation; they have a solid scientific foundation. One important concept behind them is brainwave entrainment, which means that the sounds produced by instruments like singing bowls and gongs can help your brain shift into a more relaxed state.

Typically, our brains are in beta frequencies, which are associated with active thinking and stress. However, during a soundbath, the calming sounds help guide your brain into alpha and theta frequencies. These frequencies are connected to relaxation, creativity, and deep meditation. By moving into these slower brainwave states, sound therapy can significantly reduce anxiety, alleviate stress, and support overall healing, making it an effective approach for improving mental and emotional wellbeing.
